Tailbone Injuries and Disorders

There are those who believe that the tailbone is a sort of "leftover" from human evolution. They believe that it is where our distant ancestors had tails attached, and has no importance in the function of our modern human bodies. Horse feathers! The tailbone is no such thing.

The tailbone has a role and a purpose in our bodies. The tailbone is called the coccyx by medical types. The word "coccyx" is derived from the word "cuckoo," and it was named the coccyx because it is shaped like the bill of a cuckoo bird. The coccygeus muscle draws the coccyx backward to give added support to the pelvic area when there is abdominal pressure. It draws the coccyx forward after defecation. It is also has a great many other functions. Let's just agree that the tailbone is not a useless leftover from prehistoric times, but rather an important part of the human anatomy.

The tailbone can be injured. Actually, the tailbone can be injured very easily. The tailbone isn't really broken very often (although that can happen). Usually injuries consist of bruises and pulled ligaments. And most often, the injuries will pretty much take care of themselves over time.

Tailbone disorders include tailbone pain and infections caused by cysts and tumors. Some of the symptoms of various tailbone disorders and injuries can include pain in the tailbone area, pain when you sit, pain or numbness in the arms or legs because of pressure on nerves in the tailbone area, and a mass or growth you can see or feel.

Actually, any injury or disorder to the tailbone needs to seen by and treated by a doctor. Your tailbone is not just an ancestral leftover. It is an important part of your anatomy that needs care.

Unique hub. I enjoyed reading it. When you do have a tailbone injury it hurts like nothing else. I broke mine several years ago falling off a skateboard slamming into a cement block. OUCH for sure! Great follow up articles as well.
