Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a musculoskeletal for which there is not a cure. Anyone can get fibromyalgia, but it is most common among middle-aged women. Fibromyalgia makes those who suffer with it feel tired and causes muscle pain and "tender points." These tender points are places on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms, or legs that hurt with even the slightest touch.

And those aren't the only symptoms of this disease. People who suffer with fibromyalgia can also have trouble sleeping, morning stiffness, headaches, and problems with thinking and memory, sometimes called "fibro fog."

So far, although there has been extensive research, there is no known cause for fibromyalgia. It is known that people with rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases are a lot more likely to develop fibromyalgia than other segments of the population.

There is no cure for fibromyalgia, but it is not a fatal disease, and there are medications available to help manage the symptoms. Fibromyalgia can be hard to live with and also hard to treat. It really helps to find a doctor who is familiar with the disorder and its treatment. Many general practitioners, internists, and rheumatologists can treat fibromyalgia. Rheumatologists specialize in arthritis and other conditions that affect the joints and soft tissues.

Fibromyalgia treatment usually requires a team effort. The team should include your doctor, a physical therapist, possibly other health care providers, and you. You need to take an active part in treating your fibromyalgia. A pain clinic can also be a good idea.

In June 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Lyrica as the first drug to treat fibromyalgia. Sometimes doctors treat fibromyalgia with medicines that have been approved for other purposes.

Research and studies continue. There is hope for those who suffer with fibromyalgia.
